Auburn Women's Golf In 14th After Round One Of NCAA East Regional

The fifth-ranked Auburn women's golf team shot a 5-over 293 and stands in 14th place after round one of the NCAA East Regional held at the par 72, 6,403-yard University Club course in Baton Rouge, La.

Auburn is 12 strokes off leader UCLA, who shot a 7-under 281. The Bruins are followed by Wake Forest and Furman, who are tied for second at 4-under 284. Rounding out the top-five are Purdue (3-under 285) and Louisville (2-under 286). The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA Championship in two weeks. Auburn is just three strokes out of eighth place.

"We knew coming into this tournament that we would be playing with a strong field," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "Our competition came out and posted some low scores today. As a group, the team had a solid first nine holes today. We hope to come out tomorrow and repeat that performance during all 18."

Auburn shot a 5-over 293 on the day led by senior Nicole Hage, who carded a 4-under 68, her best first round score of her career at a regional competition. Hage leads all Tigers in a tie for fifth place. Individually, Wake Forest's Nannette Hill, UCLA's Sydnee Michaels and Furman's Adrienne White are tied for first after firing 6-under 66.

Auburn had three players turn in opening rounds of 3-over 75, including Candace Schepperle, Marisa Milligan and Margaret Shirley. All performed well on the front nine, scoring par or better on 25 of 27 combined holes. The trio is tied for 59th, while Abigale Schepperle is tied for 72nd after firing a 4-over 76.

Auburn will tee off Friday afternoon at 1:20 p.m. from the 10th hole with top-seeded Duke and second-seeded UCLA. Tiger fans can follow the team on www.golfstat.com.
