May 22, 2007

Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Auburn women's golf team stands in 18th place after one round of the 2007 NCAA Championship, held May 22-25, at the par 72, 6,351-yard LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Tigers finished the day with a 20-over 308 for 18th place. Auburn held the overall lead after its first nine holes, but were unable to repeat the performance on the final nine. The Tigers find themselves just 13 strokes out of the lead with three rounds remaining.

"We opened up strong today," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "We held the lead going into our final nine holes, but were unable to capitalize on that opportunity. We have three more rounds to go, so there is a lot of golf left to be played. We start on the front nine tomorrow and hopefully we will put together a complete 18-hole game."

Southern California led all teams with a 7-over 295, followed by North Carolina and Louisville who are tied for second at 9-over 297. Stanford stands in fourth at 11-over 299, while Duke is fifth at 12-over 300. UC Irvine's Selanee Henderson leads the individual race after carding a 3-under 69. Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Stanford's Lauren Todd are tied for second after shooting 2-under 70.

Auburn's Marisa Milligan led the team with a 3-over 75, which tied her for 22nd overall. Milligan was followed by Margaret Shirley and Nicole Hage, both a 5-over 77 (tied for 52nd). Candace Schepperle finished the day 7-over 79 (tied for 82nd), while Abigale Schepperle carded a 9-over 81 and is tied for 110th.

The four-day tournament will continue through Friday with live scoring on www.golfstat.com and daily recaps on www.auburntigers.com. Auburn, who again is matched up with Denver and Indiana, is set to tee off the second round Wednesday afternoon with A. Schepperle beginning at 8:50 a.m. ET off of hole one.
