WILLIAMSBURG, Va - The Auburn men's golf team shot a 15-over 295 and is in 30th after the NCAA Championship first round at the par-70, 6803-yard Gold Course at the Golden Horseshoe Wednesday.
The Tigers made the turn at even-par, but struggled with a 14-over on the back nine. Auburn was 8-over on the par-3 12th hole and 4-over on the par-4 18th hole.
Junior All-SEC Patton Kizzire and senior Andrew Medley are tied for 89th at 3-over 73. Kizzire carded two birdies and five bogeys while Medley mixed birdies at Nos. 1, 5, 6, 9 and 14 with bogeys at Nos. 7, 8, 12, 15, 16 and 18 and a double bogey at No. 2. Junior Jay Moseley only had eight pars en route to a 74 and a tie for 107th. His up-and-down round included an eagle, two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey.
Sophomore All-SEC Glenn Northcutt made the turn at 1-under but he had bogeys on Nos. 10 and 18 and a 7 on the par-3 12th for a 75 and a tie for 126th. Junior Steven Groover is tied for 144th at 7-over 77.
"We played two holes 12 over par and we were just 15 over for the day," head coach Mike Griffin said. "We played very good golf otherwise. It wasn't a good way to start but there is still a lot of golf to play."
Stanford is leading the 30-team field at 5-under 275 and was led by Rob Grube's 64 and Daniel Lim's 69. A quartet of teams including Florida, Coastal Carolina, Minnesota and Texas are tied for second at 2-under 278. Charlotte is in sixth at 1-under 279 followed by East Tennessee State (280), Georgia (282), Michigan State (283), UCLA (283) and Florida State (283).
Alabama, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and Tennessee are tied for 12th at 4-over 284 followed by Lamar (285), Georgia State (286), Arizona State (286), Oklahoma State (287), Georgia Tech (288), Louisville (288), North Carolina (289), Southern Cal (289), Arizona (290) and South Carolina (291).
New Mexico, Texas Tech and Wake Forest are tied for 26th at 293 ahead of Duke (294) and Auburn (295).
Stanford's Grube has a two-shot lead over Florida's Tim McKenney, who shot a 4-under 66. Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie, Florida State's Matthew Savage and Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale are tied for third at 67.
Auburn will begin second round play in the afternoon wave Thursday off the No. 10 tee at 11:12 am Central with Louisville and South Carolina. The four-day, 72-hole tournament that features live-scoring on www.golfstat.com will be cut to the low 15 teams following third round play Friday.
