AUBURN - Tiger Seniors End Careers On High Note With 7-2 Season-Ending Victory Over Florida State
AUBURN--The Auburn softball team ended its 2007 season on a high note, sending its four seniors away with a 7-2 victory over Florida State Sunday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Holly Currie, Sara Ghezzi, Nicole Russo and Lauren Walton combined to go 6 for 14 with four runs batted in for the win, which was the quartet's 154th in an Auburn uniform, which tied for the most by an Auburn senior class over a four-year span.
"You can't say enough about this group," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "They've grown into leaders and become integral parts of this program. You're always sad to see a senior class leave, but you are also excited that they get to enter the next part of their lives. I'm proud of everything they've done as a Tiger."
Ghezzi paced the offense in win over the Seminoles, going 2 for 4 with three RBI, while Currie was 3 for 4 with one RBI. Ghezzi singled home runs in the first, third and fourth innings while Currie drove in a run in the fourth. She also doubled in the sixth in her final career at bat.
Walton, meanwhile, was 1 for 4 and scored a run in the third. Russo was 0 for 2 but reached base in the second on a hit by pitch.
"The senior class had a big day today, which was real fitting," Deese said. "They finished their careers in style and led us against a tough Seminole club."
Currie started the game from the circle and worked three innings, scattering three hits and a run before being replaced by Anna Thompson in the fourth. Currie ended her Auburn (26-30 overall) career with a program-record 782 strikeouts in 644 innings.
Thompson allowed two hits and a run in four innings of work to end the season with a 15-15 record. She struck out three in the win to end the season with 291 strikeouts, good for second in an Auburn single-season.
Florida State (42-21) got on the board in the first on an Auburn error, but the Tigers evened it up in the bottom half of the inning when Ashley Arcuri scored on Ghezzi's first single of the game.
Two more runs in the third gave Auburn a 3-1 lead before the Tigers broke open the game in the fourth with four runs on four hits. Tatiana Fernandez had a run-scoring double to right center in the inning, and Tigers also scored on singles by Ghezzi and Currie.
Tiffany McDonald worked 3 2/3 innings for the Seminoles to drop to 15-13 this season. She allowed seven hits and seven runs while striking out five.
