Caitlin King and Stephanie Fransoso used nice feeds from their teammates to beat the Memphis defense and its goalkeeper as the Auburn soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals in a 2-1 win in a season-opening exhibition match on Sunday night.
"We have only been practicing for a week and for a first game I thought we played well," Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "We have focused mostly on defense in practice and haven't spent as much time on offense yet so I am really happy with the starting point that this game gives us."
Trailing 1-0 just under 10 minutes into the second half, King took a feed from Gabi Rivera, beat the Memphis defense and a fallen Memphis keeper to net the first Auburn goal of the night.
"I think we played well for the most part," King said. "We were in a little bit of a lull at the beginning of the second half but then we came back and did a lot of good things. Gabi played a really good ball into me and all I really had to do was touch it past the goal to put it in."
Less than 10 minutes later it was almost an exact replay except this time it was Kori Hoelsher that fed Fransoso to propell Auburn to the exhibition victory.
"We kept fighting until the end. Kori gave me a great assist and I just hit it in, so thanks to her," Fransoso said.
Allison Whitworth played all 90 mintues and made five saves in goal for Auburn.
The Tigers will play a final exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Jacksonville State.
