Rebecca Howell and Caitlin King each scored first-half goals with Howell connecting for two in the first 11 minutes as the Auburn soccer team defeated Jacksonville State, 6-0, in the final preseason tune-up before the regular season starts on Saturday in Hawai'I vs. Kansas.
"We were really good up top tonight," Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "It the front line can keep building from where they were tonight, they will be really strong for us throughout this season."
Howell scored 6:18 into the first half as Auburn's goalkeeper Allison Whitworth bombed a ball over the defense to a streaking Howell who buried the shot over a drawn-out JSU goalkeeper. Five minutes later it was Howell darting through the JSU defense to receive a pass from Kara Kasten at the top of the box after Kasten took the ball down to the goal line and fed a wide open Howell to make it 2-0 Auburn.
King scored the first of her two goals 17 seconds after Howell's second of the night off of another Kasten feed and then ripped a shot off the fingertips of the JSU keeper from 15 yards out for her second goal of the night 10 minutes later to make it 4-0.
Chelsea Yauch finished the first-half scoring when Jaime Wheeler found Yauch with an over-the-top feed that she buried in a cluster of defenders.
Stephanie Fransoso netted the final goal of the night on a header near the far post off of a feed from Ashley Marks that went over the box.
Auburn outshot Jacksonville State, 22-2, and took 10 corners while only allowing one.
The game was delayed by 1:23 minutes due to lightning in the area.
