ROCKY FACE, Ga. --- The No. 21 Auburn men*s golf team shot a 298-287--585 and is in second, five shots behind South Carolina, after the Carpet Capital Collegiate second round at the par 72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club Saturday. Eleven of the 18 teams in the field are ranked in the top 25.
Patton Kizzire (74-70--144) and Gordon Strother (71-73--144) are tied for seventh at even par followed by Jay Moseley, who is tied for 23rd, firing a second round 4-under 68 after a 7-over 79 in the first round. Steven Groover is tied for 45th at 75-76--151, and Brent Cooper is tied for 79th with a 78-81--159.
"I am very proud of the way we have played these first two rounds," said Auburn head coach Mike Griffin. "All of our guys had a very good summer, and it is good to see that it has carried over to the fall.
Patton and Gordon put together two very good rounds, and I am proud of the way Jay bounced back after his first round. That shows senior leadership with the way he shot a 68. I couldn't be prouder. We are just five shots off the lead, and I look for us to come out and make a run for the championship."
No. 19 South Carolina (292-288--580) has the five-shot lead over Auburn, which is a shot ahead of No. 12 Georgia Tech (296-290--586). No. 3 Alabama is in fourth at 292-295--587 followed by No. 9 Duke (296-293--589), No. 11 Wake Forest (293-296--589), No. 4 Georgia (295-297--592), No. 23 Tennessee (292-300--592), Tennessee-Chattanooga (299-294--593) and Augusta State (291-303--594) and No. 7 Clemson (303-291--594), who are tied for 10th.
No. 22 Texas Tech is in 12th with a 303-292--595 followed by No. 14 East Tennessee State (291-308--599), North Carolina State (303-298--601), Georgia State (301-300--601), TCU (299-304--603), No. 6 Florida (300-306--606) and Vanderbilt (305-307--612).
Georgia Tech*s Chesson Hadley holds the individual lead at 10-under 65-69--134, four shots ahead of Georgia State University*s Joel Sjoholm (70-68--138) and seven shots ahead of South Carolina*s George Bryan IV (71-70-141) is in third.
