Auburn Equestrian Opens Conference Play With Win Over Gamecocks

AUBURN - The Auburn equestrian team defeated South Carolina in the hunt seat 7-3 and then won a tiebreaker in western based on raw score, 662.5-661.

"I fell really good about this win today," said coach Greg Williams. "They are a great team. Being at home can help you because you have the advantage of knowing the horses well."

In Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences, Auburn prevailed 3-2 as Ali Loprete, Jenny Reinhart and Anna Schierholz all scored points. South Carolina's Megan Massaro came away with MVP honors for the event.

In Western Horsemanship, South Carolina edged Auburn 3-2, with Ashley Milton and Ashley Griffith scoring points for the Tigers.

In Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat, Auburn won 4-1, getting points from Jenny Reinhart, Rebecca Rifkin, Chelsea Anheuser and Coburn Park. The MVP award was given to Park, who scored a 71.

Auburn won the Western Reining Competition 3-2 as Julie Gibbes, Ashley Griffith and Kimberly Tidwell all picked up points for the Tigers. Gibbes was named MVP.

Auburn and South Carolina tied in the Western Discipline, 5-5, so it went to raw scores to break the tie. Auburn was able to narrowly beat South Carolina by a score of 662.5-661.

"The SEC schools have won the last five national championships," Williams said. "So anytime that you get a win or a chance to win against an SEC school, you know that you are among the top schools in the nation."
