Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Auburn women's tennis team had another successful fall tournament this past weekend at the Roberta Fall Classic hosted by Alabama. Tigers Fani Chifchieva, Whitney Chappell and Mary Claire Slade all took home singles victories, while Chappell and Gaby Beelen won consolation finals in doubles action.
The three-day tournament concluded on Sunday with Chifchieva defeating Alabama's Tiffany Welcher, 6-2, 6-1 in the Crimson bracket. Chappell kept the Tigers rolling with straight set victories over UNCG's Arielle Von Strolley, 6-0,6-0, in the White bracket.
In the Gold bracket, Hil Hastenrath was taken out by UNCC's Yudesnee Pillary, 6-2, 6-4, while Beelen turned in a hard fought three set loss to Troy's Stephanie Viera, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). In the Blue bracket, Slade won by default over UNCC's Michelle Alexander.
Dunja Djuranovic went three sets with Valeriya Makarycheva of MSU in the Green bracket, but was unable to pull it out, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Natalie Sienkob of AUM got past Heather Baybee, 6-4, 6-3, in the Red bracket.
In doubles action, Chappell and Beelen defeated Alabama's Andrea Brenes and Tiffany Welcher, 9-8 (7-4) to take the Crimson bracket consolation titles. In the Gold bracket, Hastenrath and Slade defeated Jackson/Weaver of Samford, 8-5. Djuranovic and Bybee nearly took the win over Belmont's Johansson/Poza, 9-7, in the Silver bracket.
