Ashley Marks collected the first multi-goal game of her career and also had the game-winning goal for the second straight match as Marks and the Auburn soccer team defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon. The win improved Auburn's record to 2-1-1 on the season, with goalkeeper Allison Whitworth collecting her second consecutive shutout and the eighth of her career.
"Our team is so good defensively that whatever comes at them from the other team, they get it right back up to our forwards, who are all really fast. Caitlin (King) beat three defenders down the line and I just put it in; she made the cross, she made the run," Marks said.
Marks, who scored the game-winner in Friday's 1-0 win over Troy, collected her first goal on Sunday in the 25th minute. King made a run up the sideline and cut in towards the 18 before firing a pass to marks, who broke into the six and slipped it past Pittsburgh keeper Alison Finch.
Marks was back at it against in the 56th minute when again it was King who found her in the six for Marks' third goal of the weekend.
Monica Afanador put the finishing touches on the scoring when she connected on a penalty kick in the 84th minute after Kara Kasten drew a foul to the near-side of the goal towards the goal line.
"We responded great today after our slow start Friday," Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "The girls came out, we had legs, and we ran hard the whole game and ended up with a great win over a Big East team."
Junior goalkeeper Allison Whitworth earned the win and shutout by making seven saves on the weekend. Her eight career shutouts puts her in sole possession of third on Auburn's career shutout lists, three behind Meredith McPherson for second.
Pittsburgh fell to 2-2-0 with the loss.
Auburn will be back on the road for its next game, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for a match against the No. 7 Seminoles of Florida State. Kickoff is set for 7pm ET.
