Knoxville, Tenn. - The ninth-ranked Auburn women's golf team began play at the UT Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship on Friday carding an 8-over 292. The Tigers are tied for sixth with Michigan State with two rounds remaining.
Leading the team race is Arkansas, who shot 1-over 285. Alabama and Tennessee are tied for second after firing 4-over 288, and Florida is fifth at 289. Alabama's Kathleen Ekey is the individual leader after shooting 3-under 68. There is a five-way tied for second.
Senior Abigale Schepperle turned in the best performance of the Auburn group as she shot even par 71. A. Schepperle was 2-over entering the final two holes, but back-to-back birdie's put her at 71 to finish the day. She is tied for ninth.
Freshman Cydney Clanton is tied for 18th after firing a 1-over 72. Clanton was 1-under through most of the day, but bogeys on 16 and 18 proved costly. Sophomore Candace Schepperle is tied for 27th after shooting 2-over 73. Senior Margaret Shirley is tied for 49th (76), while junior Mariana Macias is tied for 76th). Competing as an individual, newcomer Sarah Thead shot a 6-over 77 and is tied for 58th.
Round two begins on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. CT. The Tigers will be playing with Purdue and Florida.
