Jennifer Hance scored a pair of goals off of corner kicks with the second coming in the 103rd minute as Ole Miss downed Auburn, 2-1, in double-overtime on Friday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.
"It was a great game with a disappointing result for us because I thought we had enough quality chances to win the game." Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "You have to give Jennifer Hance credit because she is a force to be reckoned with on corners. It's frustrating for us and unfortunate as it was our mistake (that allowed the corner)."
Hance had scored her first goal in the 19th minute when she collected a loose ball inside the six off of an Ole Miss corner and slipped it inside the far post for her third goal of the year.
After playing a relatively flat first half, Auburn (6-3-1, 2-1-0 SEC) came out firing and seemingly in a better rhythm in the second half. Rebecca Howell scored the goal that would eventually force overtime just three minutes after intermission as she finished off a cross from Kara Kasten for her team-leading fourth goal of the year. Kasten served the ball from just outside the 18 on the far side and Howell finished it off as Chelsea Yauch made an inside run and provided some interference inside the six.
Allison Whitworth made nine saves in the match and took over sole possession of third place on Auburn's career saves list with 165 saves. Next up on the list is Meredith MCPherson, who made 293 saves from 1994-1997.
The match was the fourth straight overtime and third straight double-overtime match between the two teams, with Auburn going 1-2-1.
In six of the last eight years, the winner of the regular-season match between Auburn and Ole Miss has gone on to win the SEC West. The two exceptions were in 2001, when Ole Miss won the match but Auburn won the first of four straight division titles, and in 2006, when the teams played a scoreless match and Auburn won the West.
Ole Miss improved to 5-3-3, 2-0-1 SEC.
Auburn will stay on the road for a Sunday match at Mississippi State. The match is set to start at 1pm CT in Starkville, Miss.
