Women's Golf Ties For Third At Lady Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Auburn women's golf team improved five places from start to finish at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational and ended up tied for third with a three-round score of 885. Junior Mariana Macias posted a 219 to tie for 10th.

"We had a strong finish today," head coach Kim Evans said. "I am proud of how we rebounded after the first day and had two good rounds. I continue to see improvements at each tournament and that is what the fall tournaments are all about."

Macias (74-72-73--219) turned in her second lowest three-round total of her career, 219, after firing a 1-over 73 on Sunday. She improved four places during the tournament to finish in a tie for 10th. Freshman Cydney Clanton ended up tied for 16th after shooting a tournament low 1-over 73 (74-74-73--221).

Senior Margaret Shirley improved 53 places from day one to finish as she carded a second straight 1-under 71 to conclude play in a tie for 31st. Shirley was a 3-under 69 at 15 after turning in her third birdie of the day on 11. After she bogeyed on 16 she moved to 2-under 70, but another bogey on 3 put her at 1-under, where she finished.

Senior Abigale Schepperle finished tied for 52nd (74-81-74--229), while sophomore Candace Schepperle tied for 61st (79-76-76--231).

Duke took the team title with a three-round score of 877. The Blue Devils finished a 13-over for the tournament (302-287-288--877). Tennessee took second (297-289-293--879) and Auburn tied for third with Georgia (298-293-294--885). Wake Forest (295-298-293--886) and Vanderbilt (297-299-290--886) tied for fifth.

Blue Devil Amanda Blumenherst continued to shine as she won the individual title. Blumenherst shot 7-under for the tournament (71-68-70-209). Georgia's Alina Lee took second (74-68-70--212), followed by Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino (70-73-71--214) in third.

The Tigers return to action next weekend at the UT Mercedes Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. The Oct. 12-14 tournament will be played at the Cherokee Country Club.
