BIRMINGHAM - The No. 10 Auburn men's golf team improved one spot to finish fourth with a 280-830 during the final round of competition Tuesday in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,958-yard Old Overton Golf Club.
Senior Jay Moseley's (68--201) 12-under par, 54-hole score is the lowest ever carded by an Auburn golfer. Moseley surpassed the previous mark of 202 set by himself at last year's John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii. As the John Burns was set at the par-72 Leilehua Golf Course, Moseley's 202 put him at 14-under. He now holds Auburn 54-hole records for lowest score in relation to par and lowest number of shots.
"It's a really great thing," said Auburn head coach Mike Griffin. "Jay has both of those records in the books. I can't believe he shot that well and didn't come out in first place today. It shows how truly tough the field was."
Moseley finished fifth, three shots off the individual lead. Junior Glenn Northcutt (68-206) tied for 12th, senior Gordon Strother (71-211) tied for 23rd, senior Patton Kizzire (73-215) tied for 37th and senior Steven Groover (75-220) tied for 46th.
"Glenn and Jay had really good finishes," said Griffin. "We had some problems on the 12th hole and that hurt us some. We lost a few shots out there."
Auburn was in fifth after Monday's opening rounds and moved past North Carolina to finish fourth. Host and fourth-ranked Alabama (272-810) finished 17 shots ahead of second place UAB (282-827), followed by UNLV (285-829), No. 10 Auburn, No. 19 Florida (278-831), North Carolina (284-832), No. 11 Texas Tech (284-845), Georgia State (277-845), Texas (288-848), No. 8 East Tennessee State (284-850), Brigham Young (286-854) and Georgia Southern (286-870).
Alabama's Mark Harrell (68-198) and East Tennessee State's Seamus Power (67-198) shared the individual title, two shots ahead of Alabama's Michael Thompson (66-200) and Florida's Billy Horschel (68-200).
Auburn returns to action on Friday at The Bank of Tennessee Ridges Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn., hosted by East Tennessee State.
