AUBURN - Four players scored in double figures, led by Frank Tolbert's 25 points, as the Auburn men's basketball team cruised to an 89-75 victory over NAIA Bluefield College at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Friday night.
"I thought in the first half we did some things good, but we did not shoot very well," said Auburn head coach Jeff Lebo. "These are odd games to play when the other team's big men are shooting from the perimeter and they have a different type of defense that is hard to play against."
In all, Bluefield attempted 42 three-pointers in the game, compared to Auburn's 14.
"We did a good job on the glass tonight, even though we were not much bigger than they were," said Lebo. Auburn out-rebounded the Ramblin' Rams 36-21.
After giving up an early lead to the Ramblin'Rams, Auburn bounced back and took the lead for good on a Matt Haramb three for a 15-12 lead.
Haramb's trey sparked a 15-1 Tiger run that led to Auburn leading by as many as 16 in the first half. AU led 48-36 going into the halftime break.
Bluefield attacked early in the second half, scoring five quick points to cut the Auburn lead to seven. The Tigers rebounded to build the lead back to double digits, where it would remain throughout most of the second half.
The Ramblin' Rams threatened again, cutting the AU lead to seven with 2:56 left to play, but Tolbert led the Tigers back with eight of the team's last 10 points for the 89-75 win.
Also finishing in double figures were Korvotney Barber and DeWayne Reed with 16 points each, along with Haramb with 11. Barber and Reed also neared double-doubles in the game as they finished with nine rebounds and nine assists, respectively.
Tolbert carried the Tigers in the second half, scoring 18 of his 25 points in the period. He was 10-of-14 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line.
Bluefield was led by Curtis Dixon with 21 points. He was one of three Ramblin' Rams to finish with three three-pointers as the team went 13-for-42 from behind the arc.
After playing its only exhibition game, Auburn opens the regular season on the road against Tulane, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. The Tigers' home opener is slated for Nov. 13 in a 7 p.m. matchup with Kennesaw State.
