AUBURN - Six Auburn plays scored in double figures as the Tigers rolled to a 74-62 win over Kennesaw State (0-2) in its home opener Tuesday night in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
The win is the 18th consecutive home-opening win for Auburn (1-1), dating back to an 85-77 win over Texas Southern to open the 1990 season.
Frank Tolbert, Rasheem Barrett and Korvotney Barber led the Auburn scoring attack with 12 points each as the Tigers put six players in double figures for the first time since March 2, 2004 against Mississippi State. Also finishing in double figures were DeWayne Reed and Quantez Robertson with 11 points each. Lucas Hargrove came off the bench for 10 points.
"I thought we did some good things tonight," said head coach Jeff Lebo. "But, we did not finish off the way we would have liked to."
The Tigers shot 57 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point land while holding the Owls to 41 percent shooting. The Auburn defense also tallied three blocks and 11 steals, led by Reed and Robertson with four each.
"Quantez (Robertson) did a good job tonight," said Lebo. "When he gets going, he is as good as any scorer that you will find."
One area that Lebo would like to see some improvement is in his team's free throw shooting. The Tigers were able to get to the line 22 times against Kennesaw State, but could only covert on nine of them for 41 percent.
"We needed to put the ball in the bucket and we shot well from the three finally, but we were 9-of-22 from the foul line," said Lebo. "We lose so much from the foul line, it is incredible."
Auburn outrebounded Kennesaw State, 39-32, with Robertson leading the Tigers with eight and Tolbert with seven, including three offensive rebounds.
Auburn started off strong in the first half, outscoring Kennesaw State 11-2 in the first four minutes of the game. Leading 38-23 at the half, the Tigers used a 16-6 run in the first seven minutes of the second half to take a 25-point lead.
Kennesaw State fought back, though, on the back of five second-half three-pointers from Ronell Wooten to cut into Auburn's lead, but it was too late as the Tigers rolled to the 74-62 win. Wooten led the Owls in scoring with 23 points in the game, followed by Keonte Keith with 13.
Auburn returns to action on Friday, Nov. 16 at Alabama State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Joe L. Reed Acadome in Montgomery.
