Auburn, Ala. - The Auburn women's basketball team (17-7, 5-4 SEC) defeated intrastate rival Alabama (8-17, 1-9 SEC) 74-49, in front of an orange-clad crowd in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
"It concerns me that it wasn't a pretty win, but that's giving credit to Alabama's defense," said Auburn head coach Nell Fortner.
"They were playing very aggressive and did a great job in the beginning of keeping us from getting in our offensive flow. I think eventually we did a nice job of penetrating and pushing the ball in transition and attacking the basket."
The Tigers struggled with the Tide early, falling behind as much as seven points in the first four minutes of the game. However, Auburn pulled ahead for good with a little over eight minutes left in the first half and led Alabama 36-25 at the break.
Auburn had three Tigers score in double figures. Junior DeWanna Bonner led the Tigers with 19 points. She also notched career high's with seven assists and five blocks.
Junior Sherell Hobbs followed with 16 points and freshman Alli Smalley added 15.
Hobbs had four steals in the game, her 21st of 24 games this season that she has had a steal. The Tigers had 15 team steals and 12 team blocks. Auburn led the Tide 42-36 on rebounds.
Auburn shot 43.9 percent for the game, while the Crimson Tide shot 34.0 percent. From long range, the Tigers made 57.1 percent of its shots, going 4-for-7, while Alabama managed just 28.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Alabama was led in scoring by Dedrea Magee's 14 points. Courtney Strauthers contributed 12 and Tierney Jenkins added 11. Jenkins earned a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.
Auburn will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m., in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum to take on South Carolina. Sunday is AU's "Think Pink" game to raise breast cancer awareness.
