Blythewood, S.C.--The Auburn equestrian team (6-2) was handed its first loss of the spring as South Carolina (5-3) defeated the Tigers 14-5. The Gamecocks defeated the Tigers 6-3 in Hunt Seat and 8-2 in Western.
"Our Hunt Seat team rode well and did a great job," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "Our Western team didn't perform well."
South Carolina won three events and tied another. The Gamecocks took MVP honors in all the events making up for the loss to Auburn on Sept. 29, 2007.
South Carolina tied Auburn in Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences 2-2. South Carolina's Megan Massaro won MVP honors defeating Dottie Grubb 90-63. Gamecock winners included Kristen Terebesi over Anna Schierholz 78-77. Tiger winners included Ali Loprete over Nicole Bourgeois 76-73 and Jessica Braswell over Lindsey Pace 74-70. Tying with a score of 69 were Auburn's Jenny Reinhart and South Carolina's Eleanor Kunsman.
South Carolina won Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat 4-1 behind MVP Kristen Terebesi, who defeated Coburn Park 74-64. Gamecock winners included Megan Massaro over Katie Breedlove 71-60, Alex Haskell over Rebecca Rifkin 70-68, and Sarah Stephens over Chelsea Anheuser 62-59. Auburn's Ali Loprete defeated Luci Laffitte 76-55.
South Carolina's Allison Bradley earned MVP honors in Western Horsemanship defeating Ashley Milton 74-71.5. The Gamecocks won the event 4-1. Gamecock winners included Amy Biffle over Kimberly Tidwell 73.5-73, Hailey Thornton over Amy Bohan 71.5-67, and Emily Bookwalter over Shannon Hinton 69.5-62. Auburn's Kylie Miller edged Katie Grossnickle 73.5-73.
South Carolina won Reining 4-1 behind MVP Lindsey Williams, who defeated Lyndsey Jordan 72-67.5. Gamecock winners included Chloe Gray over Paige Monfore 71.5-61, Rebekah Roof over Ashton Fairey 69-67.5, and Allison Bradley over Kimberly Tidwell 69-60. Auburn's Julie Gibbes defeated Kyla Thurlow 70-68.
"We'll make corrections in Western," said Williams. "We look forward to getting back in action against two tough opponents in Baylor and Oklahoma State."
Auburn returns to action in a doubleheader against Baylor Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. CT and against Oklahoma State Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. CT, at the Auburn Equestrian Center. The meet is open to the public, and admission is free.
