Orlando, Fla. - Auburn shot an improved 3-over 291 in the second round at the UCF Challenge but dropped to 10th with one round remaining at the par-72, 6,356-yard RedTail Golf Club. After turning in a career best 66 yesterday, Cydney Clanton shot 2-over 74 and moved to seventh.
Sisters Abigale and Candace Schepperle turned in the lowest rounds for Auburn as both were even at 72. C. Schepperle improved 18 places and is now tied for 28th. She was 1-over after the front nine, but two birdies on the last nine holes put her at 72. A. Schepperle moved 23 places and is tied for 42nd. She found herself at 2-under 70 after the first nine holes, but three bogeys later and only one birdie were the difference.
Mariana Macias shot 1-over 73 and is tied for 53rd. She was even through 13 holes, but doubled on 14. She rebounded back with a birdie on 17 to finish at 73. Clanton ended up firing 2-over 74 to move to seventh. Clanton was even through front nine, but had back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11. She had a birdie on 12, but had two more bogeys to finish the course.
Margaret Shirley shot 3-over 75 and is tied for 69th. She had three birdies, but had four bogeys and a double.
Duke's Alison Whitaker remained at the top in the individual battle after shooting 1-under 71. Teammate Amanda Blumenherst is one stroke behind (137), while Purdue's Junthima Gulyanamitta and Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg are tied for third (138).
In the team race, Duke moved to the top spot after shooting another 6-under 282. Purdue moved to second and is eight strokes behind the Blue Devils. Southern California dropped to third and is tied with Florida. Both teams are 11 strokes out of the top spot.
The second annual UCF Challenge will benefit the Florida Children's Hospital. The medalist from the 2008 UCF Challenge will receive a sponsor's exemption into the LPGA's Ginn Tribute hosted by ANNIKA May 26-June 1. Final round action begins at 8 a.m. ET Tuesday.
