Louden, Tenn. - After firing an improved 21-over 309 on Saturday, the No. 9 Auburn women's golf team moved to sixth at the SEC Championship. With one day remaining at the par 72, 6,293-yard Tennessee National Golf Club, the Tigers are four strokes out of the top five.
"The weather delayed us for a few hours this morning but our team handled the situation well," head coach Kim Evans said. "Margaret and Candace had another strong round today and they helped us improve a couple spots in the team battle. I think we made some adjustments today that were beneficial and we will need to do the same tomorrow. Hopefully we can all come together tomorrow and play well collectively to finish off the tournament strong."
Senior Margaret Shirley and sophomore Candace Schepperle continued to lead the Tigers as both shot a 3-over 75 today, despite inclement conditions which delayed action for two hours this morning. Shirley had another strong back nine as she finished at 1-under 71 after turning in birdies on 11 and 13 and just one bogey. The front nine proved more difficult for her as she had four bogeys, including three-in-a-row on four, five and six.
C. Schepperle and Shirley improved one place and are in a three-way tie for ninth. C. Schepperle also finished the back nine a 1-under 71 after firing three birdies and two bogeys. The front nine was the difference as she had two bogeys and a double.
Freshman Cydney Clanton improved nine spots and is tied for 36th after shooting 7-over 79. Clanton fared better today on the back nine as two birdies on 11 and 14 were able to make up for the two bogeys and a double. On the front nine, Clanton had three bogeys and a double to finish at 79.
After shooting 8-over 80, junior Mariana Macias remained at 48th. Macias was a 5-over after the back nine, but a bogey and a double on the front put her at 80. Senior Abigale Schepperle fell to 51st after shooting 11-over 83.
No. 5 Florida took the lead after shooting 5-over 293 (297-293--590). No. 9 Arkansas is five strokes behind (297-298--595), followed by No. 9 Georgia (300-298--598). No. 7 Alabama is fourth (307-307--614), No. 32 South Carolina fifth (300-315--615), No. 19 LSU seventh (310-310--620), No. 26 Vanderbilt eighth (308-317--625), Mississippi ninth (309-317--626), No. 16 Tennessee 10th (316-312--628), Mississippi State 11th (319-318--637) and Kentucky 12th (326-319--645).
Arkansas Stacy Lewis remained at the top of the individual leaderboad after shooting 1-over 73 today. Florida's Hannah Yun moved to second and is one stroke behind Lewis (143). Florida's Tiffany Chudy and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin are tied for third (144). Mississippi's Dori Carter rounds out the top-five (145).
Shirley and C. Schepperle are a mere four strokes out of the top five and seven strokes from first place.
