OWINGS MILL, Md. - The ninth-ranked Auburn women's golf team finished seventh at the NCAA Fall Preview with a 303-286-308--897 at the par 72, 6116 yard Caves Valley Golf Club Monday. Candace Schepperle led the way for the Tigers, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth 73-66-77--216.
"We had an up and down tournament, but I'm very pleased with the middle round that we had," head coach Kim Evans said. "We're optimistic moving forward into our next tournament, and we're going to keep simple goals."
No. 4 Arizona State claimed the team title after firing 295-291-286--872 and finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up No. 1 Southern California (298-297-285--880). No. 14 Virginia (289-294-300--883), No. 6 Georgia (293-286-305--884) and No. 10 Alabama (294-302-290--886) round out the top five.
Schepperle, who entered the day one stroke back from the lead, had with five bogeys and finished the day at 5-over 77. She finished only four shots behind Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall (73-70-69--212) for the individual title.
Sophomore All-American Cydney Clanton finished in a three-way tie for ninth, posting a 72-73-73--218. Clanton tallied three birdies on the day and had seven in the tournament.
"Candance was really was explosive and showed what she's made of," Evans said. "Cydney had a real consistent tournament and I'm happy with that."
Sarah Thead wrapped up tying for 30th with a two-day score of 77-73-76--226. Freshman Patricia Sanz made her Auburn debut finishing 56th (81-74-82--237) and senior Mariana Macias was 59th (81-78-82--241).
The Auburn women will return to the course Sept. 26-28 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
