AUBURN - Auburn carded the fourth-best round of the day, posting a 16-over-par 304, but dropped to fourth place after the second round of the Auburn Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. Arizona State posted the first sub-par team round of the tournament and holds a three-stroke lead over Virginia heading into Sunday's final round.
The Derby is taking place at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. The par-72 course is playing at 6,301 yards for the 54-hole tournament.
Standing 18 strokes off the lead heading into the final round, Auburn head coach Kim Evans knows her team has their work cut out for them to defend their tournament title.
"I thought we played really well today, but we definitely have some ground to make up on Sunday," said Evans. "This tournament is a great test for us as we have a great field to compete with and we are seeing just how tough they are. We are going to talk over some things tonight and see where we can find a few more strokes out there tomorrow."
Two Tigers are currently in the top 10 with junior Candace Schepperle leading the way in a tie for fourth. She followed up her opening-round 1-under 71 with a 1-over 73 to stand at even-par heading into the final round. She is stands seven strokes off the lead, trailing Arizona State's Anna Nordqvist (70-67--137) after 36 holes of play.
Sophomore Sarah Thead follows in 11th place with a 5-over-par 149. Thead stayed consistent in the second round as she dropped a stroke for a 2-over 74 on Saturday, following her first-round 75.
Freshman Patricia Sanz (82-74--156) had an eight-stroke improvement on Saturday to move into a tie for 42nd. She is currently tied with teammates Cydney Clanton (73-83--156) and Mariana Macias (79-77--156) after two rounds of play. Macias is playing as an individual in the tournament.
Rounding out the Auburn lineup is freshman Madison Overbey as she posted an 84 on Saturday for a two-day total of 163, finishing the day in a tie for 75th.
Individually, Nordqvist leads the way with a 7-under 137, followed by Virginia's Whitney Neuhauser with a 4-under-par 140. Azahara Munoz (Arizona State) is tied for third at 2-under 142 while Schepperle and Virginia's Jennie Arseneault are tied for fourth at even-par to round out the top five.
In the team scoring, Arizona currently stands in the lead at 8-over-par 584 while Virginia trails in second with an 11-over 587. Alabama is in fourth with a 596 and is followed by Auburn in fourth and Ole Miss in fifth (610).
