Tigers Tied for Ninth at Lady Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 14 Auburn's women's golf team finished the first day of play at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational tied for ninth after posting a 20-over-308 Friday at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

"We had another hard day," head coach Kim Evans said. "We are still missing out on consistency, which is needed to become a winning team. We will go back tomorrow and continue to work hard until we get the job done."

No. 8 Virginia and No. 23 Wake Forest are tied for first at 6-over-294. Third-ranked North Carolina is third (299), followed by No. 20 Louisville and Texas A&M, who are tied for fourth (301), No. 6 Vanderbilt (302), No. 15 Florida State (306), Ohio State (307) and Auburn is tied for ninth with Kent State at 20-over-308 to round out the top 10.

Central Florida and No. 21 Michigan State are deadlocked at 11th after registering a 21-over-309. No. 19 South Carolina (310) is 13th, with fourth-ranked Tulsa (311), NC State (312), Kentucky (312), Furman (315) and North Carolina - Greensboro (324) following to round out the 18-team tournament field.

Candace Schepperle led the Tigers, carding an even par round of 72. The SEC Golfer of the Month notched three birdies on the front and back nine, but double bogeyed on Nos. 8 and 15. Schepperle is one of four players tied for sixth. Five players registered a 1-under-71 and are tied for the lead.

Two Auburn players, Cydney Clanton and Patrica Sanz, shot a 6-over-78. Clanton opened with three birdies, but found trouble on the back nine with three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. Sanz made up for four front nine bogeys with a pair of birdies on Nos. 15 and 17. Both are in a four-way tie for 45th.

Sarah Thead had an 8-over-80 and is 59th, while Mariana Macias is 88th on a 13-over-85.

The Tigers are paired with Florida State and Ohio State on Saturday and will tee off from No. 1 at 9 a.m.
