AUBURN - All-American Kelly Marx claimed the men's 1-meter diving title and freshman Anna Aguero was the women's 3-meter runner-up Thursday at the Auburn Diving Invitational at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center. Divers from Alabama and LSU are also competing in the three-day event.

"Overall, I am pleased with how today went for us," Auburn diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "This is a tremendous meet with a lot of talent on all of the teams. Our goal was to have a high-quality meet for this time of year. Today's positive was that we were able to make corrections to dives that we have been working on and we have added new dives to our list. We'll build on this for tomorrow."

Marx, a junior, won the men's 1-meter title with a score of 342.55. Fellow junior All-American Daniel Mazzaferro (328.10) and senior Scott Morgan (305.65) were third and fourth, respectively.

"Kelly had a strong performance after the preliminary round," Shaffer said. "He had very few mistakes in the finals and that gave him the opportunity to win. Our men did a good job today."

Freshman Adam Godzinski just missed making the finals, finishing seventh in preliminary action, scoring a 289.15.

Aguero finished as the women's 3-meter runner-up with a 298.00, after posting a preliminary round score of 268.50. Diving in her first event as a Tiger, freshman Vanessa Dantin finished sixth (259.60).

"Anna stepped it up in the finals and was able to finish second," Shaffer said. "Vanessa was competing in her first competition. She'll improve with repetition and increased volume of dives."

Friday will be the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter. Both men and women will compete on the platform on Saturday with action beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free to all three sessions.
