COLUMBIA, South Carolina - Zam Fredrick scored a game-high 27 points to lead South Carolina to a 68-56 victory over Auburn in the Colonial Life Arena in the SEC opener for both teams Saturday. DeWayne Reed led the Tigers with 21 points and Korvotney Barber had a career-high 18 rebounds and six points but Auburn committed a season-high 24 turnovers.
The Gamecocks made a pair of free throws with a second left in the half for a 30-28 lead. That ignited a 19-2 run that saw South Carolina (12-2, 1-0) take a 47-30 lead with just over 13 minutes to go in the game.
Auburn (10-5, 0-1), which had 11 first half turnovers, had six more in the first six-plus minutes after halftime that saw the Gamecocks take control. Auburn closed to within 60-53 with 3:32 remaining but couldn*t get any closer. After taking a 5-4 lead almost four minutes into the game, Auburn led for all but 23 seconds of the remainder of the first half as the Tigers enjoyed their largest lead at 22-16.
Auburn shot 37 percent from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point range and 43 percent from the foul line. South Carolina shot 56 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 46 percent from the game. The Gamecocks shot 24 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent from the foul line. The Gamecocks had 18 turnovers but outscored the Tigers in points off turnovers, 25-13.
The Tigers return to action to play host to Florida in their SEC home opener Wednesday in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum at 7 pm Central.
