FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla - Auburn junior Dan Mazzaferro placed third in Friday's platform diving prelims at the 2009 Speedo USA Diving Spring Nationals, held April 22-26 at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Complex.
Mazzaferro accumulated a six-dive score of 360.50, with a 60.08 round average and a 19.90 degree of difficulty total. The Cheshire, Conn., native's biggest round came in a back 3 1/2 somersault tuck, resulting in 69.30 points. Mazzaferro advanced to Sunday's platform finals.
Competitors at the 2009 Speedo USA Diving Spring Nationals aim for a top-two finish, earning a spot on the U.S. National Team for the World University Games held June 30-July 12 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Action resumes for the Tigers on Saturday with finals for the men's 3-meter and 3-meter synchronized diving. Auburn junior Kelly Marx andvanced to 3-meter springboard finals with a second-place finish in Thursday prelims. Marx and Mazzaferro will compete in the 3-meter synchronized finals after also placing second in Thursday prelims.
