AUSTIN, Texas - Auburn senior Glenn Northcutt (74-149) and junior Cole Moreland (75-153) finished day two of the 2009 NCAA Southwest Regional tied for 28th and 45th, respectively. The 54-hole, three-day event is located at the par-71, 7,412-yard University of Texas Golf Course in Austin, Texas from May 14-16.
Northcutt entered Friday in a tie for 24th but slipped four spots on the day. The Dothan, Ala., native teed off the back nine dropping two quick strokes to holes 10 and 11. Following a birdie on 13 and another bogey on 16, Northcutt made the turn at 6-over through one-and-a-half rounds of play.
The front nine was an up-and-down ride for Northcutt, who penciled in three birdies and four bogeys. The 2007 All-SEC selection picked up two quick birdies on holes 1 and 2, but dropped a stroke to a bogey on No. 5.
"I three-putted the first hole and that wasn't a great way to start," said Northcutt. "I three putted my third hole which continued to dig a hole but hung in there and birdied one and two and almost made a hole in one on No. 2. Coming in, I had some tough shots and didn't pull them off well."
"What broke my back today was bogeying No. 6. I hit a great a tee shot right down the middle, and I was 135 yards out and had the easiest approach shot into a green all day and didn't hit a good shot and made bogey."
Northcutt recorded three consecutive bogeys on holes 6, 7 and 8 before closing the round with a birdie on 9.
Moreland, who entered the day at 7-over, made the turn at 9-over after bogies on 15 and 17. The Austin, Texas native carded birdies on 1 and 4, while dropping a stroke apiece to 2, 3, 5 and 8.
"The course actually played a little easier today," said Moreland. "I hit it better but if you don't chip or putt out here, you won't score well. I didn't have some putts fall."
The top five teams and top individual not on one of those five teams in each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 26-30. The NCAA Regionals went from a larger three-site format to a smaller six-site format this year.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament continues Friday and live-scoring can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
