AUBURN, Ala. - Kodi Burns accounted for four of Auburn's touchdowns, throwing one and running in three, and Onterio McCalebb and Ben Tate each topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the second straight game as Auburn pulled away from Mississippi State with 28 unanswered points to win 49-24 on Saturday night.
Tate carried it 20 times for a career-high 157 yards and a touchdown while McCalebb rushed for 114 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown, becoming the first pair of Auburn running backs to top the 100-yard rushing mark in back-to-back games.
Burns had nine rushes for 32 yards, scoring on three 1-yard runs, and also was 1-for-1 passing for 13 yards and a touchdown.
Ahead 28-17 at the half, Auburn scored twice in the third quarter as Burns threw his fifth career touchdown pass, a strike to Philip Lutzenkirchen to go up 35-17, and then Tate ran it in from 35 yards out for his first touchdown of the season to put Auburn up 42-17.
Mississippi State had scored 17 consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead with 4:44 left in the second quarter before Auburn answered with two late second-quarter touchdowns. A 1-yard run by Anthony Dixon and a Sean Brauchle 29-yard field goal brought Mississippi State to within four, 14-10, before Robert Elliott returned a blocked Clinton Durst punt for the 17-10 lead.
McCalebb's touchdown regained the lead for Auburn, 21-17, before Burns scored from 1 yard out with 16 seconds left in the half.
Auburn went up 7-0 on its first possession of the game as Burns capped an eight-play, 73-yard scoring drive with a one-yard rush up the middle for his first touchdown of the game.
An Antonio Coleman 20-yard interception return of a Chris Relf pass put Auburn ahead, 14-0, with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter. The interception was the first of Coleman's career.
Burns closed out Auburn's scoring with his third touchdown run of the game with 5:56 remaining as Auburn moved to 2-0 on the season.
Chris Todd was 10-of-23 for 186 yards.
Darvin Adams had five catches for 116 yards.
Auburn's 49 points were the most it has scored in a SEC game since scoring 49 at Kentucky in 2005.
McCalebb became the first player in Auburn history to top 100-yards rushing in his first two career games.
