Auburn Hosting Miles For Myles 5K On Nov. 8

Nov. 2, 2009

AUBURN -- MILES for MYLES is an initiative designed to perpetuate the legacy of leadership of the late NCAA President Myles Brand and to carry on with his valiant fight against pancreatic cancer.

As part of the initiative, Auburn will host a 5K race/walk on Nov. 8 at 4:15 p.m. CT starting at Plainsman Park and ending at the 50 yard line at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Each finisher will be congratulated by Aubie, the Auburn cheerleaders, and the Auburn Tiger Paws. All race participants will be eligible for the post race door prize drawing. Prizes include autographed items and more.

Developed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which has been joined by the WBCA, NCAA and NACDA as partners, MILES for MYLES provides an opportunity for the collegiate athletic community to demonstrate its solidarity and to raise awareness and contribute funds for cancer research, specifically in the area of pancreatic cancer.

The race/walk is open to the general public and each person participating in the MILES for MYLES event is asked to donate a minimum of $3 which will go directly to three charitable efforts to fight pancreatic cancer. All proceeds go to:

Coaches vs. Cancer -A partnership between the NABC and American Cancer Society

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund

The Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine

"Donations to NABC are not deductible as charitable contribution for Federal Income tax purposes."

The mission of the Miles for Myles event is to engage all campus communities across America in this display of solidarity as a tribute to Dr. Myles Brand. In his seven years as president of the NCAA, Dr. Brand was dedicated to enhancing the academic environment for student-athletes while at the same time emphasizing the value of diversity and inclusion. The first university president to serve as NCAA president, he led efforts to address the fiscal responsibilities in college athletics and the integration of the values of higher education with the importance of student participation in athletics.

Registration forms are available here and must be dropped off to the Athletics Complex no later than Thursday, November 5th. A late registration is available on the day of the race from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Plainsman Park at the corner of Roosevelt and Donahue.
