AUBURN - The Auburn track and field teams opened the 2010 indoor season Friday evening at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, with a light opening night of competition that included just six Tigers competing in field events.

"We didn't have a lot going on tonight but we had some solid performances," said head coach Ralph Spry. "It was pretty much what we expected. Tomorrow will be a little better indication of where we are to start the season since that's when most of our athletes will be competing."

Sophomore Ryan Fleck had the top performance of the night for Auburn, finishing tied for third in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.09 meters (6-10.25). Fleck was perfect through that height, but was unable to clear 2.14 meters (7-0.25) on his three attempts.

Junior Brittany Mattrella established a new personal best while finishing seventh in the pole vault. Mattrella cleared 3.55 meters (11-7.75) on her third attempt to top her previous best of 3.45 meters (11-3.75).

Junior Gerard Brown finished ninth in the men's triple jump, posting a mark of 14.28 meters (46-10.25). In the women's triple jump, junior Erica Akins finished 11th with a leap of 11.17 meters (36-7.75), while senior Megan Hill finished 37th in the women's weight throw with a mark of 11.70 meters (38-4.75).

Most of the action at the Kentucky Invitational, including all running events, will take place Saturday. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. CT, while running events start at 11:30 a.m. CT.
