AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn diving squad kicked off the New Year with the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens.
"We faced some very tough competition coming off the break today," said Jeff Shaffer, head diving coach. "We need to continue focusing on our individual dives and come back tomorrow strong."
Senior Kelly Marx led the way for the Tigers, finishing second overall on the three-meter springboard with a score of 382.30 points. Marx reached the finals after he finished third in the prelims (370.35). Freshman Thad Ellis finished 17th in the prelims with 282.95 points and sophomore Adam Godzinski took 19th with a score of 277.05.
On the women's side of competition, sophomores Vennie Dantin and Anna Aguero each reached the one-meter springboard finals. Dantin came away with sixth place (267.15), while Aguero took 10th (251.00).
Competing in the one-meter prelims were sophomore Mary Catherine Cochran and freshman Laura Russell. Cochran took 18th with 225.75 points and Russell finished 32nd with 195.40 points.
The Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout continues Monday with the women's three-meter and men's one-meter competitions.
