Jan. 5, 2010

AUBURN, Ala. - Senior Kelly Marx concluded the three-day Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout with a first-place finish on the platform Tuesday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens.

Marx finished in the top spot with a score of 398.75, beating out second-place finisher Aaron Fleshner of Alabama by almost 60 points. Sophomore Adam Godzinski finished seventh with 273.60 points, while freshman Thad Ellis took ninth with a score of 259.10.

Sophomores Anna Aguero, Vennie Dantin and Mary Catherine Cochran represented Auburn on the women's side of competition. Aguero, competing in her first platform competition of the season, came away with an eighth-place finish and a score of 223. Dantin finished in 11th (197.60) and Cochran took 13th (188.05). It was the first-career platform competition for Cochran.

"Overall, the purpose of this meet was to get refocused on our weaknesses so that we can turn them into our strengths," said Jeff Shaffer, head diving coach. "We had some good dives today, but they were a little below our standards. I'm very proud of Kelly and his strong finish to the meet."

The Auburn swimming and diving team returns to competition Jan. 7 when the Tigers head to Austin, Texas, for a 3 p.m. dual meet against the Longhorns.
