Track And Field Posts Six Top-Four Finishes During Opening Day Of Tyson Invitational

AUBURN - The Auburn track and field teams added one new NCAA qualifier and had six top-four finishes Friday during the first day of the prestigious Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas.

In the men's 60 meters, sophomore Marcus Rowland finished second in the finals with a time of 6.62 seconds, after clocking a 6.69 in the prelims. His time was just .01 seconds off his season best of 6.61 which ranks third in the NCAA this year. Also in the 60 meters, sophomore Harry Adams placed fourth with a time of 6.70, after posting a 6.69 in the prelims, missing his season best by a mere .02 seconds.

In the women's 60-meter dash, junior Sheniqua Ferguson finished second in the finals with a time of 7.30 after tying for second among collegians in the prelims in 7.32 seconds. Her time was a provisional qualifier although it did not equal her season best of 7.22 seconds that shares the national lead.

In the women's 400 meters, junior Joanna Atkins placed third overall and second among collegians with a time of 52.86 seconds. Her time was just off her season-best mark of 52.79 that ranks No. 3 in the nation this year. Also in the 400, sophomore CeCe Williams was 18th with a time of 54.65.

In the men's Invitational 5,000 meters, junior Ben Cheruiyot recorded his first NCAA provisional qualifying time of the year, finishing fourth with a time of 13:56.60. His mark ranks third best in Auburn indoor history and fifth best in the nation this year for NCAA Division I athletes.

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, junior Krystal Bodie finished eighth in the prelims with a provisional time of 8.37 seconds, which was good enough to advance her to the finals, but she did not run in the finals. Senior Danielle Gilchrist was 14th in the prelims to advance to the consolation finals, and she was third in that race with a provisional time of 8.39 seconds.

Junior Amber Riley competed in both the 800 meters and the Invitational mile on Friday. She won the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.35 before finishing 22nd in the Invitational mile with a time of 5:08.50.

Sophomore Jeff Sanders competed in the same two events, finishing eighth in the 800 in 1:53.80, and 10th in the mile with a time of 4:15.19.

Auburn's other top-10 finisher on Friday was senior Laurel Pritchard, who finished eighth in the women's Invitational 5,000 meters in 17:13.12.

Auburn also had one athlete in action Saturday at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio. Senior Amelia Anderson made the trip north to compete in the women's pentathlon, and finished in fifth place with a score of 3,599 points, which ranks third in school history, in her first time trying the five-sport event.

Competition at the Tyson Invitational concludes on Saturday.
