AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn honored former greats Tim Hudson, Bo Jackson, Gregg Olson and Frank Thomas in a pregame ceremony as the four were placed on the Auburn Baseball Wall of Fame but the 2010 team struggled to carry the momentum from the festivities into the game as it fell, 11-7, to Missouri.
"Anytime you have an opportunity to honor someone for what they have done for this university and this program, it was obviously a big day," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "To have those four guys come back and be a part of this day, it's hard to describe what it meant to our program and to our fans."
"It's a tremendous honor to be able to come back and be included with a group like Bo Jackson, Gregg Olson and Frank Thomas," Hudson said. "I'm thrilled to death that Auburn thought enough of me to bring me back and include me with such a group."
"The fact that I'm able to come back here and have the people of Auburn show respect for, not only myself, but also for these three athletes inducted, it gives me and my family a lot of pleasure," Jackson said.
Missouri chased Auburn starter Grant Dayton (3-2) after 4 1/3 innings, roughing him up for six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk, scoring single runs in the first and second and then two in the third to take a 4-3 lead that it would never relinquish.
With Dayton out of the game, Missouri (4-1) took control of the game with a four-run sixth, upping its lead to 10-5.
The top four guys in Auburn's order collected 10 of Auburn's 14 hits as Justin Hargett and Hunter Morris each had three-hit games and Creede Simpson and Brian Fletcher each had two hits. Hargett, Simpson and Morris each drove in a run while Fletcher drove in four to give him a team-high 13 through five games.
Nick Tepesch (1-0) went five full innings to get the win for Missouri, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk.
The Auburn Classic concludes on Sunday with Missouri and Boston College squaring off at 11am and Auburn and Florida Atlantic facing off at 3pm. Florida Atlantic was a 13-2 winner over Boston College in Saturday's early game, getting a strong seven innings from starter Mike Gipson and three RBI from both Andy Mee and Anthony Mesa.
