AUBURN - The No. 2 Auburn equestrian team defeated No. 5 South Carolina 14-5 in the semifinal round of the Southern Equestrian Championships Friday at the Auburn Equestrian Center. The Tigers improved to 13-3 while the Gamecocks fell to 7-6.
"Our girls rode really well today," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "They came out very focused and we just need to come in tomorrow and turn out the same kind of ride."
Auburn defeated South Carolina 6-3 in Hunterseat and 8-2 in Western.
In Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat, Auburn defeated South Carolina 3-2. Tiger winners included Lindsay Portela over Megan Massaro 137-128, Anna Becker over Carly Babcock 131-120 and Katie Breedlove over Kimberly McCormack 134-121. Gamecock winners included Colvin Hedgepeth over Chelsea Anheuser 126-117 and Alex Haskell over Maggie McAlary 133-131.
In Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences, the Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 3-1. Auburn was led by MVP Maggie McAlary as she defeated Megan Massaro 168-160. Other Auburn winners included Grace Socha over Kimberly McCormack 173-153 and Anna Schierholz over Eleanor Kunsman 157-153. South Carolina's Alex Arute defeated Ali Loprete 153-138. Auburn's Dottie Grubb and South Carolina's Nicole Bourgeois tied at 157.
The Tigers took Western Horsemanship 4-1 over the Gamecocks. Auburn was led by MVP Indy Roper who defeated Amy Biffle 151-141. Other Auburn winners included Kylie Miller over Taylor Singmaster 143-135, Bailey Dymond over Hailey Thornton 142-140.5 and Jessica Jones over Emily Bookwalter 143-137. For the Gamecocks, Maggie Fortune defeated Kristin Hansen 150-138.
In Western Reining, Auburn defeated South Carolina 4-1. Auburn winners included Indy Roper over Annie Laurie McDonald 144-139, Kim Pope over Lydia Roof 132.5-119.5, Paige Monfore over Audrey Jewell 143.5-139.5 and Jillian Fuller over Chloe Gray 140.5-132. South Carolina's Amanda Pope defeated Lyndsey Jordan 127-120.5.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow to compete for the Championship against No. 1 Georgia (12-2) at 10 a.m. CT at the Auburn Equestrian Center. Admission is free.
