LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Auburn men's golf team (287-572) shot 4-over par through Saturday's opening 36-holes of the 2010 Bluegrass Invitational, held at the University Club in Lexington, Ky.
The Tigers were one of just three teams to complete their second round before conditions were deemed too dark for competition. Auburn completed the opening 18-holes tied for fourth at 1-over, just four strokes off the lead.
Sophomore John Stembridge (65-136) currently leads all Tigers, followed by senior Cole Moreland (75-144) and sophomores David Zickler (73-146), Will McCurdy (72-148) and Kyle Kopsick (75-149).
"In the morning round, we played very well I thought," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "After a good start to the second round, we found ourselves having to card some bogies in the later stages of the day. We just had a couple hiccups with our short irons. Tomorrow we will need to find better putt speed.
"This is a good tuneup as far as the SEC Championship is concerned. Some of the course characteristics here will prepare us for Sea Island."
Stembridge's second round 65 is the lowest single-round score of his career and the second lowest individual round for the Tigers this season. The Norcross, Ga., native also recorded a new career-low 36-hole total in the process.
"John (Stembridge) hit a lot of good shots today that left him with some pretty easy birdie putts," said Clinard. "He was putting great today. He plays within himself, knows his game and always stays on top of his emotions."
Competing individually, sophomore Jackson Beindorf (77) was unable to complete the second round. The Vero Beach, Fla., native will resume play where he ended with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. EST.
With only opening round scores complete, Miami of Ohio (281) held the team lead followed by NC-Greensboro (282), Murray State (284), Auburn (285), Kentucky (285), Memphis (287), Bowling Green (290), South Alabama (291), Eastern Kentucky (291), Toledo (291), Western Kentucky (291), Ohio (292), Eastern Kentucky (291), Morehead State (293), Dayton (293), Gardner-Webb (296), Akron (298), Jacksonville State (298), Youngstown State (298), Western Carolina 299), Lipscomb (300), Marshall (303), Cincinnati (305), Loyola (309) and Canisius (312).
Miami of Ohio's Craig Voorhees (66) held the individual lead followed by Kentucky's Brian Beldon (67) in second.
The Tigers will begin third-round play at 8:45, teeing off No. 7.
