LEXINGTON, KY. - Sophomore John Stembridge (70-206) earned medalist honors Sunday as the Auburn men's golf team (279-851) tied for second at the Bluegrass Invitational held at the par-71, 6,997-yard University Club Lexington, Ky.
Starting the day in sixth place, Auburn stormed back in Sunday's final round, shooting its lowest single round score of the season. However, the Tigers' effort fell just short, finishing one stroke shy of tournament champions Murray State (288-850).
Stembridge broke free from a four-way tie at the top in the final round, claiming the first medalist honors of his collegiate career. The individual title marks the first time in school history three separate Auburn golfers have claimed medalist honors in the same season.
"I actually had no idea I was tied for the lead until my dad told me after 12 holes," said Stembridge. "I never let it worry me. I was more concerned with helping the team get some strokes back. Driving straight was a priority on that golf course. There is some very tough rough alongside the fairway you want to avoid. I just focused on giving myself a chance to birdie every hole coming down the stretch."
Senior Cole Moreland earned his fourth top-10 finish of the season, tying for ninth, followed by sophomores David Zickler (71-217) tied for 29th, Will McCurdy (70-218) tied for 34th and Kyle Kopsick (73-222) tied for 63rd.
Competing individually, sophomore Jackson Beindorf (74-223) tied for 72nd.
"We were 14 strokes out of the lead heading into the final 18 holes," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We made some good birdies and hit a few important up-an-downs, but just missed out on the win. All of our guys have worked hard and bought into the system. They trust me and I believe in them. This was an excellent tuneup for the SEC Championships coming up this weekend.
"I can't say how happy I am for John (Stembridge). This win was huge for him and his confidence. It's a lot of fun to watch these guys when everything is clicking for them."
The University of Memphis (284-851) tied Auburn for second, followed by top-10 finishers Miami of Ohio (295-853), Kentucky (290-854), South Alabama (278-856), NC-Greensboro (298-585), Toledo (292-868), Morehead State (298-871) and Ohio (284-876).
