TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 3-ranked Auburn women's golf team carded a 4-over-par 288 Saturday in the second round of the 2010 Southeastern Conference Tournament, placing the Tigers in sixth place and 12 strokes out of the lead heading into Sunday's final round.
Hosted by the University of Alabama, the SEC Championship is a 54-hole stroke-play event being played at the North River Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The par-71 is being played at 6,057 yards for the tournament.
The host Crimson Tide came back from seven strokes back in the second round to finish the day in a tie for the lead with Vanderbilt at 3-under-par 565. First-round co-leaders Arkansas and Georgia dropped to third and fourth, respectively. The Razorbacks carded a 288 to finish the day at even-par 568 while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-over 571 with a second-round 291.
LSU finished the day in fifth with a 6-over-par 574 while the Tigers rounded out the top half of the field in sixth, improving one stroke from Friday to head into the final round with a 9-over-par 577.
"It is a strange thing, I'm seeing some pretty good golf out there but our numbers are not reflecting it," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We have been consistent in our scoring and that is a good thing. We need to mentally get into the game and get some things to happen, get a little luck on our side. We are definitely ready for it and we look ready for it."
South Carolina finished the day in seventh with an 11-over 579, followed by Ole Miss (582) in eighth and Tennessee (589) in ninth. Florida and Kentucky finished the day in a tie for 10th with 30-over-par 598s while Mississippi State rounded out the field in 12th with a 42-over 610.
Individually for the Tigers, it was junior Cydney Clanton leading the day with a 1-under 70 in the round. Sophomore Haley Wilson remained consistent from the first round with an even-par 71. Clanton and Wilson head into the final round in a tie for 11th at even-par 142.
Senior Candace Schepperle also stayed consistent from the first round, carded a 1-over 72 for the second day in a row to finish in a tie for 19th at 2-over 144. Sophomore Patricia Sanz rounded out scoring for the Tigers with a 4-over 75, placing her in a tie for 51st at 11-over 153.
Also competing Saturday for Auburn was freshman Carlie Yadloczky. She finished the day with a 9-over 80 to tie for 53rd at 12-over 154.
"Haley had a great round going and was 3-under at one point, but she got a double on her 16th hole and that hurt," said Evans. "Cydney played really well today and Candace had a nice round, as well."
Action in the tournament resumes at 8:30 a.m., Sunday off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees for the final round.
"We will come out here tomorrow, tee it up and see if we can create some numbers," said Evans. "We just have to keep it simple and see what happens."
The Tigers will tee off in the opening wave at 8:30 a.m., along with Georgia and LSU off the No. 1 tee. Fans can follow all the action with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
