GREENSBORO, N.C. - After one round of play, the No. 3 Auburn women's golf team is in 10th place following a 15-over par 303 opening round at the Bryan National Collegiate.
Leading the way for the Tigers is redshirt junior Karlin Beck, who carded a 1-over 73 to finish the day in a tie for 17th. Behind Beck is freshman Carlie Yadloczky at 2-over-par, tied for 22nd.
The Bryan National Collegiate is co-hosted by North Carolina-Greensboro and Wake Forest and takes place at the par-72, 6,323-yard Players Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center.
"We are still continuing to have slow starts," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "We were having trouble on our first few holes, but then we collected ourselves and played pretty well.
"We let a couple shots go as we were coming in. I don't know if it is jitters as much as it is trying to make things happen."
Auburn, playing without its top two golfers, still managed to keep itself in the hunt with promising rounds from Beck and the rest of the youthful squad.
With the low round of the day for Auburn, Beck opened up with two bogeys and a double-bogey on the first four holes of the day, but rebounded with three birdies and only pars for the rest of the afternoon. Her round of 73 is the lowest round of the season for the Pike Road, Ala., native, who is seeing action in just her fifth tournament of the season.
"She did a great job today," Evans said of Beck. "We talked this morning about how it was time for her to have a good round. She has been playing well all spring and has yet to hit her niche just yet, but today was her day. It was perfect timing for our team and she put together a solid round today."
Following Beck was Yadloczky with an opening round of 74. The freshman made the turn at 2-over par and stayed steady for the remainder of the day to finish in a tie for 22nd.
Auburn's third scorer for the day was sophomore Haley Wilson, who carded a 4-over 76 to start the tournament. Wilson entered the final five holes of the day at 1-under, but struggled to close out the round and finished at 76 in a tie for 40th. Patricia Sanz tallied an 80 on the day to tie for 77th and finalize the Auburn team scorecard.
The Tigers' fifth player, Madison Overbey, logged an 88 on the opening round and holds the 95th spot on the board.
In the team rankings, Tennessee is in the lead with a team-total 287 (-1) to begin the tournament. Two strokes behind is Wake Forest, while Florida State (+3), Vanderbilt (+3) and Ohio State (+4) round out the top five.
Individually, Wake Forest's Michelle Shin leads the pack with a 4-under par 68. Tying for second are Tennessee's Nathalie Mansson and Florida State's Macarena Silva, who each carded a 69 (-3). Katie Burnett of South Carolina and Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest finished at 2-under closing out the top five players.
"We need to regroup and practice a little bit," Evans said. "We will get out tomorrow and put together a solid round. We have plenty of room to improve. We had a chance to see the course and notice a few things so we are excited to get out there and see what this team can do."
Second round action of the tournament is set to begin at 7:20 a.m. CT, with the Tigers teeing off from No. 10, starting at 8:50 a.m. and running until 10:26 a.m. Fans can follow the action with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
