AUBURN, Ala. - Dan Gamache and Trent Mummey each hit three-run home runs in Auburn's 11-4 win and season series sweep of Samford on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park. Justin Fradejas went 2-for-4 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot to extend his hitting streak to 23 games.
Gamache (1-for-2, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI) delivered his three-run blast in the bottom of the first, scoring Fradejas and Hunter Morris (0-for-4, BB, R) and giving Auburn a lead that would never be threatened.
"It looked like in the first inning they were trying to pitch around Hunter and Dan came up with a big hit that kind of jump-started us today," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said.
Mummey's seventh home run of the season came in the bottom of the fourth after Ryan Jenkins (3-for-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) singled and Fradejas drew a walk, putting Auburn up 7-2 and giving Auburn's bullpen a comfortable margin to work with over the final five innings.
Stephen Kohlscheen (1-0) picked up his first career win in his first career start, a designated split start, throwing two scoreless innings, allowing a first-inning single and a second inning walk.
"Coach (Pawlowski) told me yesterday that I was getting the start and I was pumped," Kohlscheen said. "Dan's three-run home run early in the game makes the starter's job much easier."
"Stephen did a really good job to begin the game. I thought his breaking stuff was pretty good. He has really been working on his slider and he threw some really good ones today," Pawlowski said.
Samford starter Michael Gunter (2-1) took the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits, including Gamache's blast, in two innings of work.
Auburn improved to 28-14 on the year while Samford dropped to 23-17.
Brian Fletcher finished the night 2-for-4 with a RBI, scoring Mummey with a third-inning single while Wes Gilmer (2-for-2, 2B, R, RBI) and Casey McElroy (2-for-4, BB) each had multi-hit nights for Auburn.
Jenkins, who tied his career with three hits, drove in Auburn's eighth run with a fifth-inning single and then scored the team's 10th run on Justin Hargett's (1-for-4, RBI) single to right following a double.
Slade Smith surrendered two of Samford's runs during his two innings of work, allowing RBI singles to Bo Smith and Michael Johnson in the fourth, while Jon Luke Jacobs allowed the other two runs when he gave up a ninth-inning two run home run to Tripp Swann.
Sean Ray threw a perfect eighth and Ty Kelley was a walk away from throwing a perfect seventh while Zach Blatt allowed one hit and struck out two in his two innings of work.
Prior to the game the team presented the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County with a check for $5,044 which was raised at last fall's Celebrity Home Run Derby.
Auburn returns to Southeastern Conference action this weekend when it travels to No. 7 Arkansas. Game times are set for 6:30pm CT on Friday, 2pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday.
