NCAA East Regional Tournament Central
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The No. 4 Auburn women's golf team carded a 5-over-par 293 in the final round of the NCAA East Regional Championship, finishing the tournament in a tie for third with a 4-over 868. By virtue of finishing in the top eight, the Tigers earn a spot in the 2010 NCAA Championship, the program's 15th berth in the national tournament.
"We played fairly solid today, we were in it all day and had a chance to win it there at the end, some things just got away from us," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We accomplished one of our goals here, which was to make it to the NCAA Championship. We are now looking forward to going to Wilmington and taking care of business."
The NCAA East Regional was a 54-hole stroke play event hosted by East Carolina University at Ironwood Country Club. The par-72 course played at 6,321 yards for the three-day tournament.
The NCAA East Regional was one of three qualifying tournaments for the NCAA Championship, set for May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The top eight teams from each of the three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship.
The NCAA Central Regional will take place at Otter Creek Golf Course, hosted by Indiana University in Columbus, Indiana, while the NCAA West Regional is set for the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
Freshman Carlie Yadloczky led the Tigers wire-to-wire in the tournament, capping off the event with a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to finish second overall with a 5-under 211. Her runner-up finish is the best finish in a NCAA Regional ever for an Auburn freshman and ties for the second-best finish ever for a Tiger.
"Carlie had an incredible tournament and had a chance to win it," said Evans. "She played really well today and almost chipped in at the end to tie it. She stepped up big as a freshman and I cannot say enough about how proud I am of her."
Yadloczky's tournament-total 211 came in just one stroke behind tournament medalist Katie Burnett of South Carolina. Burnett carded a 1-under 71 on Saturday to finish with a 6-under 210 for the tournament.
Also finishing in the top 20 for Auburn was senior Candace Schepperle. The Birmingham native carded a final-round 75 to finish the tournament with a 2-over 218, good enough for a tie for 19th.
Junior Cydney Clanton and sophomore Patricia Sanz each posted 2-over 74s in the final round. Clanton finished in a tie for 36th with a 5-over-par 221 while Sanz came in a tie for 47th with a 7-over 223.
Rounding out the Auburn lineup was sophomore Haley Wilson. She posted a 5-over 77 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 54th in the 122-player field with an 8-over 224.
In the team race, it was South Carolina taking top honors with an even-par 864, followed by Tennessee at 2-over-par 866. Auburn and Duke finished in a tie for third with 4-over 868s while Vanderbilt rounded out the top five with a 7-over 871.
With the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA Championship, it was Tulane (873), Pepperdine (877) and Texas Christian (880), finishing sixth through eighth, respectively, to punch their tickets.
Individually, South Carolina's Burnett and Auburn's Yadloczky took the top two spots, followed by Texas Tech's Rosalyn Kim in third with a 4-under-par 212. East Tennessee State's Nina Muehl and Tennessee's Erica Popson rounded out the top five as they tied for fourth with 3-under 213s.
"This was a successful trip, it was great for us as a team to be in the mix at the end," said Evans. "But, this was just the first step and we have one more tournament to go. We will go back home, get a little rest and get back to work."
Auburn will return to action May 18-21 as the Tigers travel to the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., for the NCAA Championship. It will mark Auburn's second appearance at the course this season as the Tigers took second there Oct. 23-25 at the NCAA Fall Preview.
