Julie King's goal in the 81st minute helped the Auburn soccer team earn a 1-1 draw at Vanderbilt on Friday night. The tie puts Auburn's record at 9-5-1, 3-3-1 SEC while Vanderbilt moved to 6-7-2, 2-3-2 SEC.
"Unfortunately for us, Vanderbilt out-played us in the first half. We came out flat and we have to be better than that," Auburn Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "Obviously we are really pleased with the response in the second half. Julie scored a great goal off a quality ball from Tasha (Prentice) and that got us back in the game. After the goal we had plenty of chances in regulation and overtime to win the game and we just couldn't finish."
Vanderbilt got on the board in the 16th minute when it put a barrage of shots on the Auburn net, at one point hitting the crossbar during three straight shot attempts. The goal finally came when Molly Kinsella turned an Auburn give away into her third goal of the season, putting Vanderbilt up 1-0.
Auburn, which had the better run of play from intermission until the end of the match, got the equalizer in the 81st minute when King headed in Prentice's cross for her third goal of the season. The goal came following a relentless Auburn attack which saw Auburn defenders Sammy Towne and Jordan Miller each push up into the attack, wearing down the Vanderbilt defense before Auburn finally netted the goal.
Auburn took 16 shots while Vanderbilt posted 19 but it was Auburn that put 10 on frame to just six for Vanderbilt.
Auburn also drew 11 corners to just three for Vanderbilt but could not capitalize on the opportunities from the flags.
Amy Howard made five saves in net for Auburn while Rachel Bachtel made nine for Vanderbilt.
The match was just the third to go to overtime this season for Auburn while it was the fourth for Vanderbilt.
Auburn's road trip concludes on Sunday when it plays at Kentucky at noon in Lexington.
