No. 12 Auburn In 11th After 18 Holes At Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Auburn senior Cydney Clanton fired a 1-under 71 Friday in the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational. As a team, the 12th-ranked Tigers carded a 5-over-par 293 in the first round and are in 11th place after 18 holes of play.

Hosted by North Carolina, the Tar Heel Invitational is a 54-hole tournament being played at the par-72, 6,285-yard Finley Golf Course. The three-day tournament features six teams ranked in the GolfWorld top-10 and 13 ranked in the top-25.

Clanton sits in a tie for 13th with her 1-under 71 while junior Haley Wilson is tied for 24th at even-par 72. Freshman Marta Sanz and sophomore Carlie Yadloczky each carded 3-over 75s while junior Patricia Sanz rounded out the lineup with a 4-over 76.

"We had a pretty good day today and Cydney came in with a very good round after a rough start," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We are getting closer to where we need to be. Carlie had a better day than the scorecard shows and Haley also played well."

After dropping two bogeys in her first five holes, Clanton was able to rebound down the stretch with three birdies over another five-hole stretch to finish at 1-under 71. She finished the day tied for 13th and is one of 35 players at even-par or better.

Wilson also posted a comeback after a rough start. Standing at 3-over-par after seven holes of play, she finished the day with only one more bogey and four birdies to finish at even-par.

In the team race, it is Alabama on top with an 11-under-par 277 in the first round. LSU, the only other team under par, is second at 3-under 285 while Duke and Florida are tied for third at even-par 288. Tulane and Michigan State rounded out the top five with 1-over-par 289s.

Individually, Alabama's Brooke Pancake is in first with a 7-under-par 65 in the first round. Tulane's Janine Fellows and LSU's Megan McChrystal are tied for second with 5-under 67s. Virginia's Brittany Altomare is in fourth with a 4-under 68 while Julia Thead (Vanderbilt), Camilla Lennarth (Alabama) and Sarah Zwartynski (Texas A&M) round out the top five with 3-under 69s.

Tee times at the Tar Heel Invitational resume at 7:51 a.m. CT off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees. Auburn is set to tee off the No. 10 tee at 9:30 a.m., playing alongside Texas A&M and North Carolina. Live stats are available by accessing www.GolfStat.com.
