Auburn - Andre Malone scored a career-high 28 points but it couldn't offset Samford's 18 made three-pointers en route to the Bulldogs' 79-68 victory over Auburn in the Global Sports Hoops Showcase in Auburn Arena on Friday.
Malone made 6-of-10 three-pointers but Samford's Josh Davis scored a career-high tying 30 points on 8-of-10 treys. Josh Bedwell added 21 points for the Bulldogs on 5-of-7 made 3-pointers. The 18 made threes broke the record of 15 made by Auburn against Arkansas in 1996, vs. West Florida in 1994 and Nicholls State in 2004, all in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
"Andre played great tonight," said Auburn head coach Tony Barbee. "I'm glad he found his confidence because he is one of those guys that really spends time on his own. He works on his own game and his own confidence. You will find him in here late at night, so I am glad that Andre got it going for him.
"I know how disappointed they (Auburn) are because of how hard they work in practice. I told them this is a learning experience that we are going through. So many of these guys, really all of them, have never played at this level before. It is like I have a team full of freshmen."
The 18 made threes broke the record of 15 made by Auburn against No. 4 Arkansas in 1995 in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
Samford (2-1) broke away from a 54-52 lead with 9:32 remaining by scoring 13 straight points to go ahead 67-52 with 6:27 left. Auburn got to within seven points twice the rest of the way but that is as close as the Tigers could get.
Davis went a perfect 7-of-7 from 3-point range in the first half to give Samford a 38-32 lead at intermission. Malone did his best to match him for Auburn as he went 5-of-7 from behind the arc for 18 first half points. Kenny Gabriel and Allen Payne each scored eight points for the Tigers.
Auburn (0-2) shot 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range, 42.4 percent from the field and went 10-of-15 from the foul line. Samford, which defeated Auburn for only the second time in 24 meetings and the first since 1940, shot 57.8 percent from the field, 54.5 percent (18-of-33) from 3-point range and 9-of-15 from the free throw line.
Auburn plays Campbell, a 97-90 winner over Middle Tennessee State in the earlier game of the doubleheader, on Saturday at 4:30 pm Central. Samford plays MTSU at 2 pm. The Showcase continues Sunday with Samford vs. Campbell at 2 pm followed by Auburn playing MTSU at 5 pm.
