Auburn - Andre Malone scored a game-high 17 points, but Auburn committed 24 turnovers in a 61-54 loss to Campbell in the Global Sports Hoops Showcase in Auburn Arena on Saturday.
Malone, who scored 28 points on 6-of-10 three-pointers against Samford on Friday, continued his torrid shooting by going 5-of-8 from long range against the Fighting Camels. Malone's trey gave the Tigers a 49-47 lead with 6:28 remaining, but Auburn wouldn't score again until another Malone 3-pointer with nine seconds left in the game that closed the Campbell lead to 57-52.
"It's the growing pains that I've been talking about since I got here," said Auburn head coach Tony Barbee. "It's part of it, understanding how to win. It doesn't happen overnight. It is a process. We put ourselves in position in all three games this year, two from leads and one from behind, but we put ourselves in position to win.
"I have to coach these guys better because they're all winners, and they all want to win. I have to show them and teach them how to win and sometimes that takes a little longer than other times, especially with a young team."
Auburn (0-3) led by as much as 42-34 on a Josh Langford conventional 3-point play with 14:41 to go in the game, but Campbell (2-2) scored nine straight points to regain the lead at 43-42.
Campbell opened the game with a 10-3 edge after Auburn missed eight of its first nine shots from the field. The Camels increased it to as much as 18-10 with 8:07 on the clock, but the Tigers closed the half on a 20-8 run for a 30-26 halftime lead.
"It's real tough," said Malone. "We talk about it all of the time. We've to find a way. We're so young. We're trying hard, but we've got to find a way to win. Right now, we don't know how to win, so we've got to do a little bit more in practice to find a way to win."
Malone was the only Tiger who scored in double figures for the second straight game as Adrian Forbes and Earnest Ross each chipped in seven points. Ross also had seven rebounds and five assists while Josh Wallace had six points and six assists, Rob Chubb six points and seven rebounds and Allen Payne six points.
Campbell outshot Auburn 42.9 percent to 35.8 percent from the field, but the Tigers went 8-of-19 (.421) from 3-point range and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. The Camels were 2-of-11 (.182) from behind the arc and 17-of-25 (.680) from the foul line.
Amir Celestin came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points for Campbell while Eric Griffin added 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
Auburn plays Middle Tennessee State, which defeated Samford 68-55 Saturday after losing to Campbell 97-90, on Sunday at 5 pm Central in the final game of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase. The game will be televised by CSS. Samford plays Campbell at 2 pm in the first game of the doubleheader.
