PALO ALTO, Calif. - Playing in rainy, wet conditions and enduring a two-hour weather delay, the 16th-ranked Auburn women's golf team was able to pull out a final-round 304, placing the Tigers in fifth at the Pac 10/SEC Challenge with a 27-over-par 879. Senior Cydney Clanton led the team with a third-place finish, carding a 4-under 209.
Hosted by Stanford, the inaugural Pac 10/SEC Challenge was a 54-hole tournament played at the par-71, 6,103-yard Stanford Golf Course. The three-day tournament featured seven teams ranked in the GolfWorld top-10 and 14 ranked in the top-25.
"It was a tough day today with the weather and the delay, but I was proud of the team for pushing through it," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "This was a very difficult tournament with a very strong field. It was a good test and will give us a lot to work on before the spring season starts.
"Cydney had a nice tournament, it was a great way for her to finish the fall. We had some other good rounds out of some people, but we need to work on putting together a complete tournament."
Clanton, a native of Concord, N.C., played a steady round with 14 pars, two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. She finished the day at 1-over-par 72, giving her third place at 4-under 209 for the tournament.
Three other Tigers managed to finish in the top 40 of the 108-player field. Freshman Marta Sanz carded a 4-over 75 Sunday while her sister, Patricia Sanz, finished with a 5-over 76. Marta finished in a tie for 38th with a tournament-total 225 while Patricia finished four strokes ahead of her, in a tie for 21st at 8-over 221.
Also finishing in the top 40 was sophomore Carlie Yadloczky. She posted a final-round 81 to finished tied for 38th with a 12-over-par 225.
Rounding out the Auburn lineup was junior Haley Wilson in 93rd with a 25-over-par 238. She carded an 86 in Sunday's final round.
In the team race, it was UCLA pulling out the wire-to-wire victory with a 6-over-par 856. Alabama followed in second with a 15-over 867 with Southern California in third with a 23-over 875. Arizona finished in fourth with a 25-over 877 while Auburn rounded out the top five with a 27-over 879.
Individually, Southern California's Sophia Popov took medalist honors with a 6-under-par 207. UCLA's Stephanie Kono finished runner-up with a 5-under 208 while Auburn's Clanton took third with a 4-under 209. Georgia's Marta Silva placed fourth with a 2-under 211 while California's Joanne Lee rounded out the top five at 1-under 212.
The Pac 10/SEC Challenge was the final tournament of the fall season for the Tigers. Auburn will return to action Feb. 13-15, 2011 at the Puerto Rico Invitational at the Rio Mar beach Resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
