TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 21 Auburn gymnastics team (2-4, 2-3 SEC) fell to No. 7 Alabama (7-1, 2-1 SEC) Friday night in Coleman Coliseum in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,075, 197.085-194.850.
"I thought we did a good job. First off, we started well," Auburn head coach Jeff Graba said. "I don't think we were at our best on floor and vault. We didn't perform poorly, we were just a little tight on those two events. We went to beam and unfortunately our last two girls, who have done a great job for us so far, ended up making mistakes. I think they grew under this environment, and I definitely think right now we are going in the right direction."
The Tigers led off on bars with a strong performance, tying their team season-high of 48.950 previously set at Georgia. Junior Kylie Shields led Auburn with a career-high 9.875 followed by a 9.825 from junior Allyson Sandusky. Sophomore Toi Garcia also posted a season-high with a score of 9.750 for the Tigers. Alabama completed its first rotation on vault with a 49.275.
Auburn was led on vault by junior Justine Foster with a 9.800 while Garcia followed closely behind with a 9.775. Sophomore Petrina Yokay and senior Lauren Brzostowski both added scores of 9.725. The Tigers finished on vault with a 48.700, while the Crimson Tide continued a successful evening by posting a season-high 49.375 on bars.
Coming off a team season high on floor last week against Kentucky with a 49.025, the Tigers looked to continue with another consistent performance, and recorded a 48.850. Rachel Inniss once again had Auburn's top floor routine, earning a 9.875. Garcia had another strong performance and posted a 9.825. Foster and junior Laura Lane each contributed scores of 9.725.
Auburn was on track to set a season-high total score, but was forced to count a fall on beam. The Tigers' first four gymnasts posted a 9.700 or better followed by falls from Shields and Inniss. Auburn posted a 48.350 on its final event. Freshman Abbey Habicht led the Tigers on beam with a 9.800, tying her season high.
The Tigers go on the road again next Friday, Feb. 18, to face the Florida Gators at 6 p.m. CT in Gainesville, Fla. A replay of the competition against Alabama will air on FOX Sports Net on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. CT.
