The Auburn equestrian team fell 11-9 today in a tight competition with Georgia in Bishop,Ga. Auburn's western riders pulled out a raw score victory 719.5-703, while the hunt seat riders suffered their first loss of the season, falling 6-4.
"We let a road win slip right out of our grasp," said head coach Greg Williams. "I think a couple of mistakes that were costly are best done now before the post season. Coach Helfer and Coach Neubarth had them prepared to win, we just couldn't close it. I never felt like the girls ever gave up, not even for a second. They are riding so well and have a great attitude. South Carolina will have their hands full coming in this weekend. I absolutely love this team."
In equitation over fences, Georgia won 3-2. Auburn winners included Maggie McAlary over Michelle Morris 83-82 and Ali Loprete over Olivia Dorey 76-68.
In equitation on the flat, again the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 3-2. Despite strong rides from McAlary, Anna Becker and Lindsay Portela, only Grace Socha and Christina Lin could come away with wins. Socha defeated Dorey 84-79, and Lin defeated Abby O'Mara 78-71.
Auburn's horsemanship riders performed impressively, winning their even 4-1, pushing Auburn into the lead. Winners included Bailey Dymond over Maria Salazar 74.5-69, Kristin Hansen over Anna Sasser 73-72.5 and Stephanie Rucci over Ali Eidson 72-67.5. Indy Roper earned Auburn's lone MVP on the day, as she defeated Dana Wilson 74.5-69.
Entering reining, Auburn had an 8-7 lead. The Bulldogs reiners fought back, winning four of five points and taking the lead for good. Hansen provided the lone point for the Tigers, defeating Kelly Truesdale 67-62.5.
Auburn will return to action Saturday, Feb. 19, as it takes on conference foe South Carolina in its final home competition of the season. The meet will begin at 10 a.m., and the team's eight seniors will be honored at halftime. There will also be tailgating competitions, with winners earning Under Armour prize packs and spirit points.
