RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - Junior Haley Wilson led Auburn with a 4-over 76 as the rest of the lineup carded 7-over 79s, placing Auburn in a tie for 14th with a 25-over-par 313 after the first day at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
Hosted by Purdue University, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic is a three-day, 72-hole stroke play event being held at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. The par-72 Greg Norman-designed River Course will play at 6,191 yards for the tournament.
"It was a very tough day today and we have been working on a lot things since the round finished," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We will keep working, get out there and try to make some things happen out there tomorrow. We will get it going, it just didn't happen today."
The top Tiger on the day was freshman Marta Sanz, who is competing as an individual in the event. Despite carding two double-bogeys, Sanz was able to finish the day in a tie for 13th with a 2-over 74 thanks to four birdies on the day.
"Marta really played a great round of golf today," said Evans. "I love what I'm seeing out of her."
As for the team lineup, it was Wilson finishing the day on top with a 4-over 76. After going 4-over in her first five holes, she finished the day out at even-par.
"Haley Wilson also had a really good round today to lead us," said Evans. "Her 76 does not show what kind of round she really had. She finished the day playing very good golf."
Rounding out the lineup was Diana Fernandez, Cydney Clanton, Karlin Beck and Patricia Sanz with 7-over-par 79s. The group finished the day in ties for 55th.
In the team rankings, it was Alabama on top with a 2-under 286. Purdue and Iowa State followed with 12-over 300s while Texas Christian and Florida State rounded out the top five with 15-over 303s.
