Women's Golf Takes 11th At Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - Auburn junior Haley Wilson carded a 1-over-par 73 in the final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, leading the Tigers as she finished in a tie for 11th with a 7-over 223. As a team, Auburn carded a final-round 300 to move up three places and finish the tournament in 14th with a 59-over 923.

Hosted by Purdue University, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic was a three-day, 72-hole stroke play event held at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. The par-72 Greg Norman-designed River Course played at 6,191 yards for the tournament.

Wilson, senior Karlin Beck and freshman Marta Sanz, who competed in the tournament as an individual, saved their best rounds for the final round Tuesday. Beck posted an even-par 72, the best score of the tournament for Auburn, while Sanz came in with a 1-under 71.

"Haley, Marta and Karlin all played pretty well today," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "This tournament was a good learning experience for me and the team. We learned some things this week that we can take back to Auburn and build off of for the rest of the spring."

Wilson's tie for 11th is her best finish of the season and first top-20 finish of the year. Marta Sanz, who finished tied for 20th with a tournament-total 74-81-71--226 notched her first career top-20 finish.

Beck, one of Auburn's two seniors, had the best team round of the day with an even-par 72. She finished tied for 29th with rounds of 97-78-72--229 (+13). Junior Patricia Sanz (79-78-79--236) followed in a tie for 59th at 20-over while freshman Diana Fernandez (79-80-78--237) came in a tie for 67th at 21-over-par.

Senior Cydney Clanton (79-83-77--239) rounded out the Auburn lineup in a tie for 75th at 23-over-par.

Alabama took the team title, posting a 3-over291 to win with an 11-over-par 875. Iowa State carded the low round of the day with a 1-under 287, giving the Cyclones a tournament-total 16-over 880 for second place. Florida State (891), host Purdue (896) and Georgia (907) rounded out the top five.

Individually, Alabama's Stephanie Meadow carded a final-round 69 to take medalist honors with a 4-under 212. Florida State's Maria Salinas followed with a 3-under 213 while Georgia's Marta Silva took third with a 2-under 214. Northwestern's Lauren Weaver and Iowa State's Sasikarn On-Iam rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth with 2-over 218s.

"We took a lot from this event and we will go back to Auburn and get to work," said Evans. "We will re-shuffle the lineup a big and get ready for the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans."

The Tigers will take this weekend off before returning to action Feb. 27 - March 1 at the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans.
